Content Description

Early trauma may cause the brain, through both structure and function, to keep the pain of such trauma away from conscious-awareness. While a lack of conscious-awareness can promote survival, this same state can threaten the organism in later life, through the various manifestations of neurosis. The cure of neurosis is to feel the feelings of early pain directly and consciously, in integrateable portions.

The text for this course describes the structures and phenomena in the brain that correspond to neurosis and mental health. In particular, the text describes how disconnection between lower and higher structures, and between the right (feeling) and left (intellectual/consciousness) brains, keeps the energy of early trauma intact, while connection ameliorates it. The text also relates how meditation, cognitive therapy, and belief systems can reinforce disconnection.

Practical Outcome Objectives

1. The student will acquire basic literacy on the brain structures involved in the disconnection that characterizes neurosis, and the connection that characterizes mental health.

2. The student will appreciate the necessity of right orbitofrontal cortex engagement (that is, feeling pain) for effective psychotherapy.

3. The student will understand some of the limitations, and advantages, of meditation, cognitive therapy, and drug therapy.
